What should be in your home first aid kit?

You can never be too prepared for unexpected emergencies.  So, take a look at the list below to see what you should keep on hand just in case in your home first aid kit.  See this post for what you should have on-hand in your medicine cabinet at all times, too.  Read on for Mama Nurse to explain what home first aid kit must-haves you need to have on hand for injuries. 

Here are the top 10 home first aid kit must-haves!

1. Wound cleanser:

Hydrogen peroxide:  Hydrogen peroxide is for cleaning a wounds.   Never, ever, use rubbing alcohol on wounds, it will hurt! For more information on how to clean wounds – see this post on how to treat scrapes and cuts at home.  (affiliate link)

Also, you might want to consider replacing hydrogen peroxide with VASHE wash as discussed in this post. It is a bit milder on wounds, helps prepare the wound bed to heal and is very easy to use. (affiliate link)

2. Antiobiotic Ointment

2. Antibiotic ointment such as Neosporin or bacitracin to put on wounds to prevent infection.  To use, put the cream on wound 3 times a day until the wound is healed.  (affiliate link)

3. Band-aids - you should stock all shapes and sizes from little to big for all sized scrapes. (affiliate link)

4. Gauze rolls or pads – these are for deeper wounds to stop moderate to severe bleeding. (affiliate link)

5. First aid tape – to secure gauze for bigger wounds. (affiliate link)

6. Ace bandages – to wrap around injuries and keep them immobilized (affiliate link).

7.  scissors and tweezers: You should have tools like tweezers and scissors to get small splinters and to cut tape (affiliate links)

8. Latex Gloves and PPE- you should stock a good supply of gloves and masks (And i’m sure many of you have lots of masks left over from COVID!).

9. Cold packs – You should stock the instant cold compresses that get cold when you crack them like. And for everyday bumps and bruises, definitely keep some of these cute little ice pack in the freezer too! For adults I like this one that can be used for heat and cold (affiliate links).

10. Stop the bleed kit – If you haven’t heard about this initiative, you can learn more here. It was developed to educate lay people on how to stop arterial bleeds before help arrives.  If someone is severely bleeding, they can bleed out in 5 minutes!!!
