When parents are getting ready to welcome a baby home, they baby-proof the house. We don’t want children getting into things they aren’t supposed to, or could harm them if they find it. Parents should lock cabinets, lock toilets, cover outlets, and put medications up high. As parents, we want to protect our kids from all harm. It is a normal and natural instinct. It is also normal over time to allow your child to take risks and experience consequences and maybe become a little more lax as they get older. But, there are still safety risks in your home for older kids -read on to learn how to keep tweens and teens safe.
Medicine Cabinest
There are certain things that as parents we still need to be vigilant about as kids older. Medicine cabinets are great high places to keep meds, for little kids. But, I am more worried about your tween or teenager finding those medications in your medicine cabinet. Yes, it can happen.
Wait, what?
Yes. Unfortunately, some kids like medication. Even if it isn’t your child, it could be your child’s friend or next door neighbor. If it’s a “good” medication, they can sell it. Kids take and sell more medications than you think.
If a child is depressed and contemplating suicide, taking a handful of pills is not uncommon. If you have a gun in the house that is not locked up, or if they know how to access it, tragedy can strike. Watch this video here to learn more about gun safety, too.
So, please, even as your kids get older, lock up your meds and things you don’ t want them to have access to. Put them in away in a place out of reach, lock them up and don’t give them the code. Put them in a place that isn’t easy to access. I want your kids to be safe as they grow.
