Safe sleep

Every parent is taught about safe sleep before they leave the hospital. It’s really quite simple. Remember that if you are tired, always put the baby down on their back in a safe space.

How to keep your baby safe:

Babies should sleep alone

Babies should sleep on their back with one swaddle or wrap

They should not have extra blankets piled on top. They should only wear one more later than you are wearing to be comfortable. So usually a baby pajama and a wrap or swaddle is perfect, depending on your room and temperature.

The room should be around 68 degrees

Of course it can range from 67-70ish, but cooler is better and you will need to determine what is best for your family environment.

Sleep in the same room

Sleeping in the same room as you has also been shown to decrease the risk of SIDS – so babies can be in a bassinet or co-sleeper in your room, until about 3-4 months of age. Once they are too big for your sleeper or bassinet, then transition them to a crib in their own room.

Swaddlers are safe and easy to use

With my first son, the options for baby swaddles was slim and I ended up getting really good at swaddling with a muslin blanket. There are SO many options now for swaddles and sleepers that you can just go on Amazon and pick one that you like.

I love this one from Burt’s Bees – comes in adorable colors and is made with 100% organic, GOTS certified, breathable cotton, which helps babies not to get over-heated.

Basinets are a great choice for a safe place for your infant

This SNOO co-sleeper is the bees knees. I only used it with my daughter and it is lovely. If they made on of these for adults I would sleep in it. It is well worth the investment and saved us from many sleepless nights.

For a more budget friendly option I also highly recommend this HALO bassinet sleeper. I love that is swivels and you can bring it down to the height of the bed to pick up your baby, and swivel it back when you are done feeding and putting baby back to sleep.

Hopefully your babies are good sleepers (mine were NOT). What matters is you get sleep when the baby sleeps and keep them safe! Even just putting the baby next to you for a nap while you take a snooze isn’t safe. Get in the habit early of always placing them back in the bassinet or crib when they are sleeping.

Happy sleeping!
