What is stop the bleed? And, why is it important?

Did you know, if someone is bleeding uncontrollably, they can die within 5 minutes?

If you saw someone bleeding, or if your child was bleeding uncontrollably, would you know what to do?

There are 3 simple steps you should follow until emergency help arrives.

The Stop the Bleed campaign was created to save lives.  Learn more about what to do below!

Step 1 - call 911 immediately

In any situation where someone is bleeding uncontrollably, the very first step is to call 911 or your local emergency number. Time is of the essence, and professional medical help needs to arrive as soon as possible. While waiting for help to arrive, follow these next steps.

Step 2 - Apply pressure to the wound

If you or your child is bleeding severely, you must try to stop the bleeding by applying pressure to the wound.

Here’s how to do it:

Find a clean cloth, bandage, or even your hand if nothing else is available.

Place the cloth or bandage directly over the wound.

Apply firm and continuous pressure. Don’t lift it to check if the bleeding has stopped; this may disrupt any clot that’s forming.

If blood soaks through, add more layers of cloth or bandage, maintaining the pressure.

Remember, the key is to keep applying pressure until professional medical help arrives. This pressure helps to slow down or stop the bleeding, giving the injured person a better chance of survival.

Step 3 - Elevate the wounded area

If possible, elevate the injured limb or body part above the level of the heart. This can further help reduce blood flow to the wounded area. For example:

If it’s an arm or hand that’s bleeding, help the person raise it above their head.

If it’s a leg or foot, gently raise the leg and support it with cushions or pillows.

Elevating the wound, in conjunction with applying pressure, can be especially effective in controlling bleeding.

Remember, it’s essential to stay as calm as possible during this emergency. Panic can make the situation worse. While waiting for professional help, reassure the injured person and keep them as still as possible.

Learn basic first aid!

While these steps are crucial, it’s highly recommended for parents and caregivers to learn basic first aid techniques. Knowing what to do in an emergency can make a significant difference in the outcome. Also, consider taking a first aid and CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) course to prepare yourself for various emergency situations.

Understanding how to respond when someone is bleeding uncontrollably is essential knowledge that can save lives. Remember, call 911 immediately, apply pressure to the wound, and elevate the injured area. Being prepared and staying calm can make all the difference in a critical situation.
