A hot topic when I was in nursing school many many moons ago was whether or a parent should put a toddler on a leash. I’m sure you have all seen them, straps that attach to the child usually on a backpack that the parent holds, just like you are walking a dog. So, what is so big about a toddler on a leash? Toddler Safety!!
Before I had children and before I went to nursing school I was totally opposed to them. Shouldn’t ALL children know not to run away from their parents? Or shouldn’t parents be diligent enough to watch their children so they don’t just run away? HA! That is my 20 year old naiveté at it’s best!
Runners!
I was fortunate enough to not have any children who are runners. But I have a nephew who was, he would escape in the blink of an eye.
My sister is diligent, mindful, and has appropriately disciplined children. But some kids just run. I can’t imagine a scarier feeling than to to take your child out in public knowing that if they get distracted they might just run away from you before you even realize they are gone.
So think about it like this – Think about that independent 2-year-old who doesn’t want to sit in a stroller and wants to walk through a busy amusement park, or the 2-year-old who wants to walk through the airport by themselves. And my goodness, if they want to walk or run by themselves, let them! Let them get all that crazy energy out (hello good nap!)
Using a backpack with a leash can give them a sense of independence but provide parents with a sense of security knowing that they won’t lose their child if they turn their head the other way for a second. Should parents use them all the time? Definitely not. Should they use them instead of watching their child? Most definitely not. Should they use them to restrain their child inappropriately. Absolutely not.
So why use a leash for your toddler?
If you are a parent with a child that is a runner, then this is for you. Use it. Use it for the peace of mind that you need and deserve, knowing that you are not a “bad parent” for using a leash, but a great one – for having the forethought to give your child something that will keep them safe and foster independence at the same time.
Parenting choices are so hard. Do what you need to keep your kids safe and happy. And if it reduces your stress, then why not?
There are lots of super cute toddler backpacks with a removable leash and lots of space for essentials, so they can feel independent too!
